India

An Immersive Workshop

Grow in your understanding of film photography, build lasting friendships with a team of like-minded photographers, and immerse yourself in the inexhaustible beauty of India. Our workshop experiences encourage and demonstrate sincere interactions with locals, where you’ll learn to create together, allowing the camera to bridge caps between worlds.

March 12-22, 2020

"It didn't feel like a workshop, but more like traveling with friends, which for me was the key to creating an effective and life-changing workshop experience. We were learning together, and this experience is printed on my mind. Your smile and your positive vision were equally important."

- Sylvain Bouzat

Something to Consider

It’s important to mention that these workshops demand of us the highest level of respect, courtesy, and compassion for the communities we visit and the people we photograph. We are not there to “take” anything. As photographers, we first observe, learn, and, when the moment is right, create something together with our subjects. Every image is a gift, requiring the full attention and participation of both the subject and the photographer. With that understanding, we are all equals, leaving the photographer with far less pride for the image he’s created and far more concern for the story it tells. If our hearts are open to it, India will teach us more about life than we could have ever imagined.

Q & A

Q: How much is the Workshop Investment?

A: The 10 day, all-inclusive workshop is $4,200.

Q: How do I secure a seat?

A: In order to reserve your seat, we ask for a 50% deposit and a completed application.

Q: What’s included in the investment?

A: In addition to the workshop, one-on-one mentoring sessions, unique access to locations and peoples, and the assistance of translators when necessary, the workshop fee also covers transportation, domestic flights within India, lodging, and food during your stay. You will be responsible for booking your own airfare to and from India, as well as obtaining a travel visa. We’ll also hook you up with discounted rates at Negative Lab and give you a code to purchase film at nearly wholesale rates with the Film Supply Club.

Q: Is this a film only workshop, or can I bring my digital camera as well?

A: We welcome photographers of all mediums, but we do strongly encourage you to focus on shooting film.

Q: How many rolls of film should I bring?

A: We typically recommend you allow yourself to shoot between 3-5 rolls of 120mm film per day. The workshop is 10 days, so I’d bring between 30-50 rolls. If you’re shooting 35mm we recommend 15-25 rolls.

Q: Is India Safe?

A: Yes. India is safe, especially the locations we’ve chosen for the workshop. The culture in India is one of the most hospitable I’ve experienced in my travels. Like anywhere, including your home town, of course it’s important to be aware of your surroundings.

Q: What airport do I fly into?

A: You’ll fly into Varanasi on or before the 11th and out of New Delhi on or after the 23rd. If you’d like to come early and/or stay later, of course you are more than welcome to do that. We highly encourage you do.

Q: Will someone pick me up from the airport?

A: Yes! As soon as you book your flights to and from India, you’ll send us your flight numbers and confirmations. We’ll schedule everything from then on.

Q: Do I need a visa for India?

A: Most likely! All US citizens are required to have a valid passport and a visa. It’s super easy to apply for the E-visa. There are a number of websites that offer this service, and here’s one we recommend: Visa To India.

Q: What day should I leave?

A: The workshop begins on the morning of March 12. You’ll need to arrive in Varanasi sometime on or before the 11th, so make sure your flight is scheduled to arrive on the proper day. Most likely, you’ll be losing a day on your flight, so you might need to leave on March 10th.

Q: Do I need travel insurance?

A: Yes! We require that you purchase travel insurance and recommend World Nomads.

Q: Do I need vaccinations for India?

A: We highly recommend that you consult your healthcare professional. Typically, vaccinations are recommended for India as well as a prescription of malaria pills to be safe.

Q: How should I pack?

A: We ask that you pack lightly and require that you pack in a backpack and not a rolling suitcase. This makes transportation far easier. In certain cities, we’ll be navigating through rough cobblestone streets and rolling bags become a nuisance. I pack in one camera backpack and a messenger bag of film and personal items.
